The Coal Development Branch utilizes state funds to promote economic development across the Commonwealth. This includes administering
- LGEDF single coal county grants
- LGEAF coal and mineral entitlements
- LGEDF-Coal Severance HB line-item projects
- Community Economic Growth Grants created by HB 267
- multi-county coal severance grants.

Local Government Economic Development Fund |

Coal severance grants are available for any coal-producing county to assist in diversifying local economies beyond coal production through the LGEDF grant process. LGEDF grant money can also be granted to specified entities by line-item appropriation.
HB 380, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2007-2008 biennial budget of the Commonwealth, expands the definition of eligible grant activities to include nonrecurring investments in the following: public health and safety; economic development, including industrial development; public infrastructure; information technology development and access; and public water and wastewater development.

Community Economic Growth Grant |

The fund, which was established during the 2005 General Assembly as HB 267, provided nearly $10 million in grant funds allocated during the 2005-2006 biennium. This grant relied on bond sales from the general fund and was available to counties, cities, special districts and school districts. The CEGG Program provided grants to assist eligible recipients with funding for projects that would enhance economic development of their respective community.
